Alaskan artist Sherri McDonald has been binding books and creating with paper since 1993. Her studio is located on Douglas Island where she and her husband live with their two children.
Sherri’s earliest memories of art began at her grandmother’s kitchen table, which started a lifelong love and appreciation for art of all kinds. Sherri attended the University of Minnesota where she studied printing and papermaking. After graduating she began her bookbinding career apprenticing under a Japanese style bookbinder in Stevenson, Washington.
Sherri continued working at a hand bindery in Austin, Texas, until she moved to Juneau, Alaska in 1997. It was here she started her own bookbinding art business, Bound to the Word Bookbinding. In her studio, Sherri creates hand made books and paper collage landscapes.
Sherri has worked with many mediums, but her true love is paper. Paper has a unique beauty that brings a wonderful richness to her work, it’s secret is in the fibers. In her landscapes she uses many layers of decorative and hand made papers which she meticulously pieces together, until she sees Alaska come alive in her collages.
