Featured Artists: Abby Focht and Glenn Ojard

We're excited to be kicking off another year of First Friday events! We have a superb lineup of talented artisans on tap for this year's monthly featured artists. We start off in February with jewelry maker Abby Focht and spray paint artist Glenn Ojard.

Abby FochtWith Valentine's Day coming up, we have a hunch some folks might be looking for some jewelry. Our featured artist, Juneau jewelry designer Abby Focht, can help with that! Abby's work is primarily metal with stones, and each piece is handmade and one-of-a-kind. Her work has a vintage look and combined with the uniqueness of each piece gives the impression of a treasured heirloom. Abby's latest collection of work - through her Swallow's Journey line - includes lots of earrings and fashion rings. There are also a few necklaces and bracelets for good measure.

Glenn OjardOur second guest artist this month is Glenn Ojard. We first met Glenn last fall when he came in to Kaill's to film a video for his Streets of Juneau video series. This series has been very popular around town, a local phenomenon if you will. While in the store, he created a beautiful original spray paint artwork for us on the spot, and that's when we knew we needed to learn more about Glenn's art. One thing let to another, and we're excited to be showing his unique work for the month of February. We'll have several canvas originals on display. Plus - Glenn has made an edition of 50 prints that he will be giving away free on First Friday.

Our February artists will be featured throughout the month. Join us for the opening on First Friday, February 2, from 4:30 to 7:00 pm to meet them in person and have best selection.

New Work by Brenda Schwartz

Brenda SchwartzOne big catalog update last month has been for marine artist Brenda Schwartz. From Wrangell, Brenda is also a boat captain and that's where she spends her time not painting - out on the water. We love the story of how she first developed her signature style of painting over navigational charts. We are told that as a kid growing up on the boat, she would draw on her parent's charts. Probably not much appreciated then, but we sure appreciate it now!

Brenda SchwartzSeveral new prints have been added to Brenda's catalog, and we also have a couple original paintings in the gallery currently. In addition, we've added a catalog of Brenda's prints on metal. These aluminum prints are becoming a trend in printmaking because of their modern look, and also because they are so easy for the collector. Archival inks on a sturdy, ready to hang medium. Brenda's metal prints include marine scenes on navigational charts, as well as a series of sea life images including salmon and octopus and the rockfish shown here.

See all of Brenda's work hanging in the gallery now or on our website at www.anniekaills.com.

New Arrivals Around the Store

We have several new arrivals already this year and many more on the way - we sent Colleen and Ben to a big buying show to pick out lots of new treasures, so watch for those to start arriving in coming months. Of course, the big event for the gift store this month is Valentine's Day, and we have plenty to choose from. From jewelry to bath products to vases, to the signature gift wrap, you can count on us!

Here are a few highlights of new arrivals a around the store:

RBD Pottery One of our favorite new finds is a new line of pottery, RBD Pottery. These are classy and simple pieces by Rachel Bultman from Homer, Alaska. Rachel crafts her work out of highest quality porcelain, then hand decorates with a variety of designs including flowers or geometric patterns.

Willow & Luna

Tired of flowers and jewels? The ladies have been loving our new line of handmade bags from Willow & Luna. These are backpacks, handbags, and purses, handmade right here in Juneau using the highest quality materials.

Nashelle Designs On the other hand, maybe jewelry is just the ticket. We're fully stocked, including a huge display of two cases by Nashelle Designs with many new pieces. Also new work from Kristin Ford and several other artists - lots of special pieces by Alaskan and American artists.

Robert Fletcher

Check out our display of wood bowls from Juneau's Robert Fletcher. Just one example of our handmade house wares from incredibly talented craftspeople. And if you're a fan of Robert's work (how could you not be?), mark your calendar for April when he'll be our featured artist!

Venturing Mermaid

The baby boom continues, and we continue spoiling them. Our latest line of baby goodies is from Venturing Mermaid, made here in Juneau. Baby booties and other fun baby stuff like bibs and some oh-so-practical waterproof bags. Cute on the outside, protected on the inside to keep that wet onesie away from the rest of the diaper bag!

Kibbys And finally, because us Juneauites love our dogs way too much, we want to highlight these dog treats from Kibbys. These have been incredibly popular, and are made here in Juneau including organic ingredients. The #1 ingredient is cricket flour - an up and coming, protein-packed superfood. Apparently dogs like crickets because these have been flying off the shelf!

We're starting to get into the swing of things for the new year, and we've totally rearranged and refreshed the space. If you haven't come in this year, you're in for a treat - what a difference a coat of paint makes!

We hope you can stop by and see all these great finds in person this month... and remember, there's always something new at Annie's! Also, get the latest updates during the month by following us on Facebook and Instagram!
