Nan Emmett realized her desire to become an artist at an early age. Her first pottery sessions and use of a clay studio came before the age of 5, thanks to the patience of a neighboring artist.

At University she focused on a BFA in painting until a class in ceramics changed her artistic direction forever. It was the sculptural aspect of clay rather than the functional wheelwork that spoke to her and it was here that she was first introduced to the raku technique.

Throughout time rattles have been used for healing, calling down the spirits and as a soothing active form of meditation. Handcrafted from clay and primitive fired, these Spirit Rattles are both a sculpture and a rattle created to comfort and celebrate life. Each rattle has a unique expression and resonance.
