Tales from Annie Kaill’s | Is it Spring Yet?

Erin taking a break between snowstorms—look at those Pinwheels!

Greetings and welcome to my first-ever blog attempt—a companion to our Instagram, Facebook, and now YouTube (we have our own channel now!) series Tales from Annie Kaill’s. If you’ve watched any of them you’ve met Erin Mitchell, my wonder-woman sister, sidekick, and clock-watcher (so I don’t drag on too long). You’ve also met Karen Beason, our in-store framer extraordinaire and Tales from Annie Kaill’s videographer (as well as an amazing artist and incredible human in general). And you’ve met me—Colleen Goldrich—aka the 3rd Annie! The three of us make up most of the current staff at the store. Natalie, Ava and Lisa round us out with their lovely spirits, appreciation of beautiful hand-crafted items and their great sense of style! So, if you call or email, you’ll be hearing from one of us!

Well, spring in Alaska means March in Alaska and that means chaos! We’ve had lots of snow! We’ve had lots of rain! We’ve had lots of wind and lots of avalanches! We haven’t had lots of sun but we’ve had enough to give us a good dose of Spring Fever! And along with the bit of sun our clocks have moved forward so we get a bit more light every day. And the increased daylight at the end of the day grows daily.

All of this means that we’ve been stocking up on lots and lots of fun and functional items for you, your family and your home (both inside and out)! Because nothing cures spring fever more than preparing for the onset of longer warmer days and all of the fun that comes with them!

New items from April Cornell. This year’s offerings include tablecloths, runners, place mats, napkins and aprons as well as a wonderful assortment of cushions, throws and a few very lovely serving trays!

Locally made floursack towel and napkin sets from Juneau’s Frost + Fur.

Table Art by Michael Michaud. Michael’s line includes napkin rings, salt cellars, whimsical boxes, trivets and serving pieces. Our variety includes herbs, asparagus, lavender, hostas, monstera leaves, ferns, daisies and more!

We’re excited to introduce new artists:

We are carrying fabulous felt items from California’s Graf Lantz! These are sleek, modern and beautiful! We’re offering a variety of coasters, table runners, felt trivets in many fun shapes including banana and monstera leaves, flowers, circles and more. We have their environmentally friendly mesh shopping bags which store conveniently in their own attached pocket. And we couldn’t resist bringing in several of their gorgeous felt and leather totes, shoppers, and backpacks.

Another new artist/maker is Leah Goodstein. Leah hails from Anchorage where she creates vibrant colorful and functional ceramics. Her patterns are of birds, fruit and flowers and they exude spring! Our collection includes mugs, small bowls and serving trays, kiddush cups and hamsas. They are right at the front of the store and make you feel happy the moment you look at them!

We found one more Alaska maker to bring in for you. Fairbanks’, Macy Possenti and her Printworthy Art Line includes very nice linen tea towels with Alaskan designs of mountains, birch trees, wildflowers and more. We also have Macy’s newest addition of cotton-rope-and-leather baskets/bowls.

Pamela Smilow is another artist new to Annie Kaill’s. Although Pamela’s work is known in many places around the world including New York, her home state, I am especially excited to bring her work in because she is a longtime friend of my husband’s family! Her work is gorgeous, eclectic, unique and so fun! We are pleased to offer a variety of Pamela’s prints. Pamela has been able to expand her catalog of work to include scarves, table runners, tea towels, note cards, notebooks, coasters and soon cutting boards. It’s amazing what she is able to have her images printed on. We’re just thrilled to offer them to you!

We’ve also recently restocked. And lastly, for the purposes of this lengthy blog post, I can’t conclude without mentioning one of the funnest things that just came through our doors…PINWHEELS!!! Colorful, spinning, wonderful Pinwheels! These are made in California by Paper Arboretum. They are weather resistant and made of printed polyester paper. The designs include images of butterfly wings, closeups of flower petals, and more. They are fun! They are Pinwheels!!!

There’s even more that’s new for your home but too much to list here! Stop by, follow us on Facebook and Instagram and check out our newest thing—Annie Kaill’s on YouTube!
