Courtenay was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. Daughter to artists Lynn and Byron Birdsall, she had an early start in the arts and has played with various mediums and subject matter over the years. After studying art at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota and a short stint living in Eugene, Oregon, she heeded the call of her home state and moved to Skagway in 2007. She is an avid hiker and finds unending inspiration in the Alaskan landscape and its many inhabitants. Working primarily in a blend of acrylics and watercolors, she strives to capture the lush textures and vivid colors that abound in nature. Enjoy the magic of these lands!
I am grateful to live, play and create on Lingít Aaní (Tlingit land) and respectfully acknowledge the Lkoot Kwáan people on whose traditional lands I now roam. I honor the land itself and the generations who have stewarded it since time immemorial. Gunalchéesh (Thank you).”
